Why Isn't My Website Generating Enquiries?

Nine common reasons a business website brings in few enquiries, and how to check each one yourself.

If you have a website but enquiries are rare, the cause is rarely one thing. It is usually a combination of who finds the site, what they see when they arrive and how easy it is to get in touch. This guide sets out the most common causes and how to check each one yourself. None of these fixes guarantees more enquiries, but each removes a genuine obstacle.

1. Limited Google exposure

The problem: Google shows your pages to very few people.

How to check: In Google Search Console (Google's free tool for website owners), open the Performance report and look at impressions, the number of times your pages appeared in results. Very low impressions mean few people are seeing you at all.

2. Weak search rankings

The problem: Your pages appear, but too far down the results to be clicked.

How to check: In the same report, look at average position for the searches that matter. Positions beyond the first page rarely bring meaningful traffic.

3. Irrelevant visitor traffic

The problem: People arrive, but they are not your customers. They may be in the wrong area or looking for something you don't offer.

How to check: Review the search queries in Search Console and the locations in your analytics. If the queries don't describe what you sell, the traffic won't become enquiries.

4. Unclear service information

The problem: Visitors can't quickly tell what you do, who for and where.

How to check: Show your homepage to someone unfamiliar with your business for ten seconds. Can they say what you offer and where you work?

5. Missing trust signals

The problem: Visitors are unsure whether to trust you.

How to check: Look for genuine reviews, real photographs, named people, a physical address and examples of work. Absence of these makes a stranger hesitate.

6. Difficult navigation

The problem: Key information is hard to find.

How to check: Try to reach your most important service from the homepage on a phone. More than two or three taps, or unclear menu labels, are warning signs.

7. Weak calls to action

The problem: The next step isn't obvious.

How to check: On each important page, is there one clear action (call, enquire, book) visible without hunting for it?

8. Mobile usability problems

The problem: The site works on a desktop but frustrates on a phone.

How to check: Use your site on your own phone: tap buttons, fill in the form, read the text. Note anything small, slow or fiddly. Our guide to why mobile website design matters explains what to look for.

9. Broken contact journeys

The problem: The form or phone link doesn't work, or enquiries never arrive.

How to check: Submit your own form, call your own number from the site, and confirm the message reaches the right inbox, including the spam folder. See writing a contact page that generates enquiries for practical improvements.

Where to start

Work through the list in order. There is little point perfecting a form if almost no one sees the site, and little point attracting more visitors if the contact journey is broken.
