If your website is not appearing for the searches that matter, the solution is rarely a single quick fix. The most effective approach is to find out what is actually holding the site back, then improve it in a sensible order.
This guide is for websites that already exist. If you are still deciding whether SEO is worth investing in, read does your business website need SEO?.
Step 1: Diagnose before changing anything
Set up Google Search Console if you have not already. It shows:
- Which searches your site already appears for.
- How many impressions and clicks each page receives.
- Which pages are indexed, and why others are not.
This tells you whether the problem is that Google cannot see your pages, or that it sees them but does not rank them.
Step 2: Fix indexing and technical problems
If important pages are not indexed, nothing else will help until that is fixed. Common causes include accidental noindex tags, blocked sections in robots.txt, redirect errors and duplicate pages. Technical SEO basics explains each.
Check page experience too. Core Web Vitals explained covers speed and stability measures.
Step 3: Improve pages that are close to performing
Search Console often reveals pages that appear on the second page of results for relevant searches. These are usually the best opportunities. Improve them by:
- Answering the searcher's question more fully and clearly.
- Adding practical detail, examples or FAQs customers actually ask.
- Writing a clearer page title and description.
- Adding links from related pages on your site.
Step 4: Fill the gaps in your content
Compare the services and areas you offer with the pages you have. If a significant service has no page, people searching for it have nothing to find. Our guide to local SEO landing pages and search architecture explains how to plan this without creating duplicate pages.
Step 5: Strengthen internal linking
Link related pages together with descriptive anchor text. This helps visitors move through the site and helps Google understand which pages matter most.
Step 6: Build relevance and trust
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate; see our Google Business Profile guide.
- Gather genuine reviews.
- Earn mentions from relevant local organisations, suppliers and associations.
What to avoid
Google's spam policies describe practices that can harm visibility, including:
- Keyword stuffing.
- Buying links.
- Mass-produced pages with little original value.
- Copying content from other websites.
Measuring progress
Compare Search Console data month by month and against the same period last year for seasonal businesses. Look at impressions, clicks and the searches you appear for, not only rankings for one phrase. Expect gradual improvement; see how long SEO takes.
