Website Redesign vs Building From Scratch
Should you improve the website you have or start again? The right answer depends on its foundations, not just how dated it looks.

When a website starts to feel dated or underperforms, the natural question is whether to improve it or start again. Both can be the right answer. The decision should be based on the foundations of the current site, not just its appearance.
What each option means
Improving or redesigning the existing site usually keeps the underlying platform and much of the structure, while updating design, content and specific features.
Rebuilding from scratch means a new platform, structure and design, with existing content reviewed and carried across where it is useful.
When improving your current website makes sense
- The platform is reliable, secure and supported.
- You can edit content easily.
- The page structure broadly matches your services.
- Search performance is reasonable, and you want to build on it.
- The main problems are visual, or a handful of weak pages.
In this case, targeted improvements to messaging, mobile layout, speed and calls to action can deliver a lot without the cost and risk of a full rebuild.
When rebuilding is usually the better option
- The site is built on an outdated or unsupported platform.
- Simple changes require a developer.
- The structure no longer reflects what you sell.
- Mobile experience and speed are poor at a fundamental level.
- Repeated patches have made it fragile.
Our article on how to know when your business has outgrown its website explains these signs in more depth.
Questions to ask before deciding
- What exactly is not working: enquiries, visibility, editing, appearance or speed?
- Is the problem in the platform, the structure or the content?
- Which pages currently attract visitors from search? Google Search Console can show this.
- What will the business need from the website in the next three years?
- What is the total cost of continuing to patch the current site?
Comparing the two
| Consideration | Improve existing site | Rebuild from scratch |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Disruption | Lower | Higher, needs careful migration |
| Ability to fix structural issues | Limited | Full |
| Long-term flexibility | Depends on platform | Designed in from the start |
| Search risk | Lower if URLs are unchanged | Manageable with proper redirects |

Protecting search visibility in a rebuild
A rebuild should never mean starting from zero in search. Good practice includes:
- An inventory of every existing URL and how it performs.
- Keeping valuable content, improving rather than discarding it.
- Permanent (301) redirects from old URLs to their closest new equivalent, as described in Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes.
- Checking indexing in Search Console after launch.
